How server settings reach players

On a server, its rules, balance and skills apply to everyone, whatever each player's own copies say. Changes reach players within seconds.

On a server

The server’s fantasy-server.toml, fantasy-balance.toml and fantasy-skills.toml decide for everyone on it. When a player joins, the server sends them its settings, and their game uses those while they’re connected. A player’s own copies of those three files make no difference there.

Change a file while the server runs and every player online gets the new values within a few seconds, as soon as the server has read the file again. Nobody has to rejoin.

When a player leaves, their game goes back to its own files.

A player’s own settings

fantasy-client.toml is never sent anywhere. The HUD, camera, controls, volumes, theme and quest tracker are each player’s own, on every server.

Single player and LAN

In single player your world’s own files decide. When you open your world to LAN, you are the host: your world’s files decide for the friends who join, as a server’s would.

What players can’t change

A player can’t turn on anything the server has turned off: abilities that hurt players, flying in a dimension, driving someone else’s mount. The server checks each of these itself, every time.
