Change taming, breeding and wild mounts
How quickly mounts tame and grow up, how many spawn, whether wild ones despawn, and what they get up to on their own.
Taming and breeding
In fantasy-balance.toml, under [taming]:
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
speed |
1.0 |
How quickly mounts are tamed: the temper they gain from food and from each ride that ends with you bucked off, and the chance a taming item works. 2.0 is twice as fast |
foodHealing |
1.0 |
Health a mount gets back from food |
breedingCooldownSeconds |
300 |
Seconds after a foal before a mount can breed again |
growUpSeconds |
1200 |
Seconds a foal takes to grow up. Feeding still speeds it up |
How to tame each mount, what it eats and what it breeds with are in its Riders Encyclopedia entry.
How many spawn
chance under [spawning] thins out wild spawns: 0.5 is about half as many wild mounts, 0 none at all. To keep one mount out of the wild, use wildSpawns = false in its section of fantasy-server.toml.
By default wild mounts stay put once they spawn, as horses do. Set despawnFarAway to true to have untamed ones nobody is near despawn, as monsters do. Tamed, named, leashed, ridden and bred mounts never despawn.
Where each mount spawns, and how often in each biome, is set by data packs, and a change there needs a restart: see What data packs change.
Wild life
Wild mounts graze, burrow, bask, sleep, call and hunt on their own.
- In
fantasy-server.toml, under[wild]:behaviorsturns all of it off (they only wander and look around),huntingstops predators hunting small wild animals (never pets, named or leashed animals, or players), andforageFindsstops foragers turning up small finds. - In

What wild mounts may do to blocks is covered in Keep abilities from hurting players or blocks.

fantasy-balance.toml
taming.speed#
How quickly mounts are tamed: temper gained from food and from each ride that ends with you bucked off, and the chance a taming item works (2.0 = twice as fast, 0.5 = half as fast). Taming challenges keep their item counts.
taming.foodHealing#
Health a mount gets back from food.
taming.breedingCooldownSeconds#
Seconds after having a foal before a mount can breed again (as vanilla animals: 300).
taming.growUpSeconds#
Seconds a foal takes to grow up (as vanilla animals: 1200). Feeding still speeds it up.
spawning.chance#
The chance a wild spawn goes ahead, multiplied (0.5 = about half as many wild mounts, 0: none).
spawning.despawnFarAway#
Untamed mounts no player is near despawn, as monsters do. Tamed, named, leashed, ridden and bred mounts never do. Off: wild mounts stay, as vanilla animals do.
wild.activity#
How often untamed mounts do things (2.0 = twice as often, 0.5 = half as often). Busier mounts cost a little more server time.
wild.startleDistance#
How close players can come before a shy mount bolts, multiplied (0: nothing is shy).
wild.noticeCreativePlayers#
Wild mounts notice players in creative mode as they do anyone: shy ones bolt and sleepers wake. Off: creative players go unnoticed, as spectators always do.
fantasy-server.toml
wild.behaviors#
Untamed mounts graze, burrow, bask, sleep, call, hunt and the rest on their own. Off: they only wander and look around.
wild.hunting#
Let wild predators hunt small wild animals (never pets, named or leashed animals, or players).
wild.forageFinds#
Let foragers turn up small finds as they dig and root around (flint, berries, a nugget, now and then raw iron or copper), left where they find them. Off: they forage without finding anything.
mounts.*.wildSpawns#
Allow natural spawns in the wild.
