Set up quests and the narrator
Turn quests and the narrator on or off, choose what quests may place in the world, and make players earn their mounts.
The narrator writes to players in their Field Journal as they meet and tame mounts, with tasks about each one. Quest settings are in the [quests] section of fantasy-server.toml.
On or off
| Setting | Off means |
|---|---|
enabled |
No quests at all: no introduction, no letters, no tracker, and no quest people or foes. Players’ progress is kept for when they’re back on |
introduction |
New players aren’t greeted by the narrator’s introduction and first quest |
encounters |
Quests place nobody in the world (the narrator’s camp, a captive to rescue, a named foe). Such an objective counts once the player stands where it would have been |
lockEncyclopedia |
A mount’s Riders Encyclopedia entry shows everything as soon as the player discovers one, instead of opening up as they finish its quests |
Each player can also choose how letters reach them in their own game: see Hide, shrink or move the quest tracker.
Make players earn their mounts
Off by default. With [quests.earnMounts] on, a player can still tame, saddle, equip and whistle for a mount, but can’t do what’s switched on below until they finish one of that kind of mount’s quests:
[quests.earnMounts]
enabled = true
# Take the reins of a tamed one.
riding = true
# Breed them.
breeding = true
# Give them Bond Shards and Crystals.
bondItems = false
Mounts with no quests are never held back, and a quest that asks the player to ride or raise one opens that early, so a quest is never blocked by its own rule.
Rewards and foes
In fantasy-balance.toml, under [quests]: mountXp (bond experience quests give mounts), experience (experience points for players), hintDelay (how long a riddle waits before the journal shows its hint, 0 at once), and bossHealth and bossDamage for the named foes quests place.
To look at or move along a player’s quests, use the quest commands.
The settings
Each with what it does, its default and the values it takes. Copy a line, or change them all in the Settings Workbench.
fantasy-server.toml
quests.enabled#
Quests and their narrator. Off: no introduction, no letters, no quest tracker, and no quest NPCs or foes. Players' quest progress is kept for when quests are turned back on.
quests.introduction#
Greet each player with the narrator's introduction (and its first quest) the first time they join the world.
quests.encounters#
Let quests place their people and foes in the world: the narrator's camp, a captive to rescue, a named foe. Off: such an objective counts once the player stands where it would have been.
quests.lockEncyclopedia#
Keep a mount's Riders Encyclopedia entry to what anyone who met one could tell (its picture, name, description, temperament, size and riders, and the player's own field notes) until the player finishes one of the mount's quests: where it lives, how to tame and breed it, how it rides, its abilities and stats open then. How to tame one opens early once a quest asks the player to tame one. Mounts without quests, or switched off, show in full, and nothing is held back while quests are off or encyclopedia.revealAll is on.
quests.earnMounts.enabled#
Make players finish one of a kind of mount's quests before they may do what is switched on below with mounts of that kind. Off: riding, breeding and bond items are never held back, whatever the switches below say.
quests.earnMounts.riding#
Only while enabled is true: hold back riding. The player can't take the reins of a tamed mount of the kind (its driver's seat; a passenger seat on someone else's mount stays open). Checked as they get on. Taming one by riding it still works.
quests.earnMounts.breeding#
Only while enabled is true: hold back breeding. The player can't feed mounts of the kind into love mode.
quests.earnMounts.bondItems#
Only while enabled is true: hold back bond items. The player can't give bond items (Bond Shards and Crystals) to mounts of the kind; they still level up as they follow and fight.
fantasy-balance.toml
quests.mountXp#
Bond experience quests give mounts (the server's progression.xpMultiplier applies too).
quests.experience#
Experience points quests give players.
quests.hintDelay#
How long a riddle waits before the journal shows its hint (0: at once).
quests.bossHealth#
Health of the named foes quests place.
quests.bossDamage#
Damage of the named foes quests place.
